Dr. Bukar Usman’s Burkinabe Cultural Integration Award
In April 2017, the National Museum of Burkina Faso in collaboration with Association Makaranta, an Ouagadougou-based non-governmental organisation formed to promote Hausa language and culture, education and socio-economic development of the Hausa community, conferred an award on Dr Bukar Usman. He was chosen for the honour in recognition of what they saw as his commitment towards the development of cultural integration and peaceful coexistence between people of different cultures. Below are messages congratulating Dr. Usman on the award and on the newspaper publication of his travelogue, “My Trip to Burkina Faso”.

Thank you very much – Prof. Emeritus Frank Giwa-Osagie What a beautiful story. Your copious expedition notes have given us the feeling that we were there with you. It was really an auspicious moment. – Prof. Isa Mshelgaru Sir, I congratulate you on this occasion of your award in faraway Burkina Faso. What a great honour to be recognized at home and abroad! The honour is as much yours as ours, all those who know and respect you. The narrative makes a very informative reading…though I would have loved to hear the views of Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Your concluding statement about human rights and tolerance in interpersonal relationship underscores the trilingual inscription at the royal throne: “While it is possible for the herdsman to move hundreds of cattle in one direction with one stick, it is much more difficult to control human beings in like manner.” Ahuta lafiya. Yours truly – Japh C. T Nwosu JCT Nwosu. Good morning. I thank you very much for your compliments. Senator Kwankwaso was called upon to respond on behalf of the awardees. His award was in appreciation of his assistance to Niger Republic in establishing schools which admits annually 50 Nigeriens and 50 Nigerians. His statement was to appeal to the Hausa Community in Burkina Faso to embrace Western Education with all seriousness. This is in line with the aspirations of the Association Makaranta. As you know makaranta in Hausa is school/education. One of the Association’s spokesmen who is 64 confided in me his regret for not having Western education. I asked him whether it was Burkinabe Government which denied him and the Hausa community of the opportunity. He said ‘No.’ He said that it was his father who dissuaded him and there were many like him whose parents did not embrace Western education. I could see how happy some members of the Association Makaranta were receiving their certificates after undergoing few months of adult education. That tells the whole story. With best regards.- Dr. Bukar Usman Congratulations Baba and welcome back home. You are the pride of not only we your children but also the entire Biu people and Nigeria at large. Once more, congratulations Sir. – Arc. Isa Garba Halidu Thanks for the travel report. It’s educative and exciting, particularly what you refer to as the comic aspects, which reveal our humanity in all its crudity. Once again, congratulations on the award. – Prof. O. A. Adekoya Floreat. May I recommend you click on the link below for a beautiful read on Burkina Faso and have a glimpse of their language, culture etc even before the advent of Islam from the eye of an Ingot… Recently on our ‘Whatsapp’ platform we learnt of the 371 ethnic groups of the near 180 million+ Nigerians. Well Burkina Faso with under 20 million population has 63 ethnic groups including Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba and Igbo….It is a must read. – Busuyi Onabolu Jakadan adabi, nagode! Ranka Dede! I pray this splendid travelogue is published hard copy somewhere. Congratulations once more. – Prof. Olatunde Okanlawon Please permit me to CONGRTULATE YOU on your wonderful achievements in the field of human development.
